Growing up, as a child, in our household tea was the go-to beverage. Coffee was only ever brought out occasionally and then only if we had visitors.
Coffee was something reserved for special occasions.
However when I started work and left home I lived in shared accommodation and everyone else there drank coffee. So I followed suit and pretty soon tea was a thing of the past. All my peers and colleagues drank it so I did as well.
Some years after my job entailed working on construction sites out of town for up to 12 days at a time out of every 14. I met a Portuguese fellow who worked on the railway construction site I was working on and one evening he invited me over for coffee. And, man was that coffee different, far better than anything I had tasted before. Extremely strong and almost syrupy. But very different and not something I ever had anywhere else. Unfortunately he didn’t show me how he made it and I didn’t ask.
Whilst I enjoyed drinking coffee it was generally only ever instant, or filter coffee when in a restaurant, but once I got married I took more of an interest in the actual brewing of the coffee.
Newlyweds are generally short of money so dining out and drinking expensive coffees was not an option and so began the start of my now extensive experience of buying and using many different coffee makers, from the very cheap to the more expensive. Although I haven’t yet graduated to having a commercial coffee maker in my home, but I do have one at the office.
Over the years I have owned many different coffee makers from the drip type, to espresso, percolators, single serve and French presses.
And if anything my interest in getting that perfect cup of coffee has intensified. There are now so many ways to make coffee that it is quite difficult to keep up.
And that is why I have created this website to share my tips, experience, reviews and ideas for crafting that ideal cup of coffee.
